A Ton of Japanese Animation News Arrived Over the Festive Season

The Christmas holidays present a wealth of pursuits considerably more enjoyable than catching up on the updates: discovering surprises, feasting on holiday treats, and harnessing deep breathing to refrain from snapping at relatives. Hopefully you managed to enjoy all these things and more. That said, the showbiz industry never sleeps, and this is particularly true for the realm of anime. Many thrilling news items emerged during the holidays, and just in case you didn't see any, here is a compilation of the most exciting bits.

One-Punch Man Its Third Season Will Continue (Come 2027)

Perhaps the biggest piece of news, the much-discussed controversial season that was the third season of One-Punch Man proved insufficient to halt further production. The show will return with a follow-up batch of episodes in 2027—such a distant date they might as well have labeled it season 4. Even more shocking, the studio J.C. Staff will continue to be leading the project. Thankfully this time, helmer Shinpei Nagai is on board to direct from the start, which might be a positive development. But, the main art for the second cour is the same image the one used for season 3, just with characters Saitama and Garou facing different directions. This leads one to believe that, at this point, they could be trolling the fans.

Ruri Dragon Will Be the Premiere Shonen Jump Anime Produced By Kyoto Animation

Kyoto Animation has built a standing for being an prestigious animation studio, setting itself apart not just for the high caliber of its work but for the fair treatment of its employees—a sadly unusual standard in the industry. Curiously, until now, it had not produced an anime based on a manga from Shonen Jump, possibly the most famous magazine in the business. Ruri Dragon will end that streak, and what a excellent choice it is. The manga by Masaoki Shindo gained a huge following when it debuted in 2022 after just a small number of issues, but then went into a extended pause due to the author's health issues. When it resumed publication with a lighter schedule, the series proved it hadn't lost the fans' support and positive sentiment, and now the community is thrilled about the upcoming KyoAni adaptation.

Kingdom Season 6 Will Get a Sequel Now in the Works

Kingdom is the best-selling, decades-spanning Shueisha manga that is aside from One Piece. If you've are unfamiliar with it before, it's because it only recently got an English release, but the anime has been going on for years, and its sixth season was another excellent entry. Apparently that was just the first half, because a "sequel" has been revealed as currently being made, and it will probably premiere in 2026.

Science Saru Is Adapting A Witch in Mongolia Into an Anime Series

One more studio famous for the superior craftsmanship of its productions, Science Saru has brought us masterpieces of the quality of Space Dandy, Devilman Crybaby, and, more recently, Dandadan. This time, the studio will be producing the adaptation of Tomato Soup's manga A Witch's Life in Mongol, inspired by the true story of Fatima, an prominent woman and scholar in the Mongol Empire in the 13th century. From the trailer, the anime called Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia will have a distinctly fresh and captivating visual style, which is somewhat reminiscent of Ranking of Kings. Scheduled to launch in July 2026, this one will without a doubt be on my watchlist.

Tougen Anki Will Continue With a Second Season

Immediately following the release of the final episode of the first season, it was announced that Tougen Anki will be getting a sequel. Adapted from the Japanese legend of Momotaro, Tougen Anki brings to life the manga by Yura Urushibara. The second season of the anime will delve into the Nikko Kegon Falls Arc, but a specific air date has not yet been announced.
