A young person from Australia has faced legal proceedings after reportedly vandalizing a sizable blue sculpture of a mythical creature by affixing plastic eyes to it.

The 19-year-old, 19 years old, appeared via phone at the local court in the state of South Australia on that day, charged with one count of damaging property.

In a statement at the time of the recent event, the local council explained that CCTV footage showed a individual putting fake eyes on the artwork, which residents have nicknamed the “Cast in Blue”.

The accused did not enter a plea and informed the judge she was unwell, according to media sources, with the magistrate recommending her to secure a legal representative before her next court date in the final month of the year.

A day after the alleged incident, the local mayor said that repairs to the much-loved community sculpture would be costly as the adhesive eyes could not be removed without damaging the sculpture.

“This wilful damage to a valued public artwork is inappropriate and disrespectful,” Mayor Lynette Martin remarked in mid-September. “It is not harmless fun, it is pricey - it is also disappointing to those members of our society who have embraced the Blue Blob.”

The mayor added the council would pursue the “significant” restoration expenses from those accountable for the vandalism.

When the sculpture was initially suggested, it received varied responses from the local community due to its cost and design.

Costing A$136,000 ($89,000; £68,000), the sculpture depicts a mythical megafauna, with the creators inspired by an ancient anteater-like marsupial found in local caves that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.
