The mission follows weeks of statements by the administration to focus on the progressive municipality. California’s governor Gavin Newsom criticized the action, labeling it “straight from the autocrat's manual”.

“He sends out masked men, he dispatches Border Patrol, he dispatches ICE, he creates worry and terror in the community so that he can claim credit for addressing that by sending in the military forces,” he declared. “This mirrors the firestarter putting out the inferno.”
