Governor Noem Labels Chicago a 'Battlefield' After Federal Agents Shoot Woman

Kristi Noem, who serves as President Trump's top security official, labeled Chicago as "a combat zone" on Sunday. This came after federal agents shot a woman, and the governor of Illinois accused the administration of worsening the situation instead of resolving it.

The Governor's Comments on Television

During an appearance on a news channel on Sunday, Noem criticized the city’s mayor, Brandon Johnson. The mayor has publicly opposed of the federal Ice raids and deployment of the national guard in Illinois, a measure he called "unhinged and unhealthy".

"It’s wrong, penalties are necessary for that and for leaders that stand up and deliberately mislead about the actual conditions," remarked. "Chicago is a war zone and he is dishonest so that lawbreakers can go in there and destroy people’s lives."

Federal Action and Trump's Authorization

These comments came after Trump’s authorization to send 300 members of the Illinois national guard to Chicago, with orders to protect government agents and property. This action happened just shortly after national guard troops were dispatched to Washington, where the commander-in-chief took control of the city’s police force in what he described as a "clampdown" on crime, a strategy now extending to a string of other US cities. "We will address Chicago probably next," the president stated at the time.

The Secretary's Justification of Government Actions

The governor supported the government's strategy, insisting on Fox that locals supported the government intervention. "They understand that where we have gone we have increased freedom," she remarked. "Safety has improved, we have removed numerous offenders that are off the streets of Chicago, simply because we’ve been there."

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker Replies

Appearing on a CNN program Sunday, the Democratic Illinois governor, JB Pritzker, claimed the administration of escalating the crisis rather than solving it. "It is they who are turning it into a battlefield," he stated.

"They need to get out of Chicago. If they’re not going to focus on the most dangerous criminals, as the commander-in-chief promised they are going to do, they need to get the heck out."

Border Patrol Shooting Details

Federal officers on Saturday shot and injured a female while firing at an individual who attempted to hit them. The woman who was shot was a US citizen and was armed with a semi-automatic weapon, a government spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin stated, adding that the woman was alleged in a US Customs and Border Protection intelligence bulletin last week of revealing agents' private information.

The Governor's Condemnation on Online Platform

Pritzker also condemned the deployment in a post on X on Saturday, stating: "The Trump Administration’s Department of War presented a demand: call up your troops, or we shall." Pritzker called the decision "completely unacceptable and against American values," and noted that it had been made "without our consent".
