An ex- Royal Marines Commando acted as a “man in a rage” when he mowed down dozens of Liverpool football club fans during a victory parade, in what many feared was a act of terrorism, according to court proceedings. “The video was truly shocking.” Victims in the incident cried as video from the car’s camera showed people being thrown into the air as he accelerated into crowds and shouted: “Get out of the way!” Doyle, 54, is due to be sentenced on Tuesday following his guilty plea at the start of his trial last month to 31 offences against 21 adults and eight children. ‘A Man in a Rage’ Prosecutors stated the court that the video evidence from Doyle’s large people carrier was “truly shocking”. It showed the parent shouting “expletives” and “fucking move” while he headed straight for hundreds of fans, with people frantically dragging children to safety as he blasted the horn. It was stated in court that Doyle acted as a “man in a rage whose anger had completely taken hold of him” as he continued driving into the mass of people, accelerating while individuals were struck by his vehicle. Extent of the Injuries Overall, the former Royal Marine injured 134 individuals within a mere seven-minute span – including more than 50 requiring hospital care. An infant was “remarkably” uninjured even though he was left on the roadway when Doyle’s car hit his pram, the court heard. A supporter, Simon Nash, was seen being launched into the air by the vehicle, suffering a cut on his head, rib fractures and numerous scrapes. Doyle was heard screaming “fuck’s sake move! Get out of my path!” before ploughing further into screaming supporters, including an elderly woman and children who became trapped beneath the vehicle. Celebration Descends into Chaos Addressing a packed courtroom, the prosecution said approximately a million individuals had attended “what they thought would be a joyous occasion” to celebrate the football club’s championship win. The celebratory atmosphere turned to “terror”, the prosecutor said, when the driver entered the crowd while trying to collect a companion who had been at the parade. “Some at the scene believed the events unfolding was a terrorist attack.” Brave Intervention Stops Driver As bodies lay on the ground, the vehicle’s path was stopped by a former soldier, Dan Barr, who climbed into a rear passenger seat and held the car’s gear selector in “park”. Even then, Doyle kept his foot on the accelerator, according to evidence. During questioning, Doyle stated he reacted in a “blind panic” because he feared for his life. Yet, prosecutors contended that the dashcam footage demonstrated Doyle “just lost his temper in his determination to reach his destination”. It was further stated: “Consumed by anger, he targeted the crowd and in doing so he intended to cause them serious harm.” Dangerous Driving Prior to Incident The video indicated the driver was driving recklessly prior to entering downtown, overtaking cars dangerously and running red lights. He disregarded traffic diversion measures and bypassed other cars, including an ambulance and police cars, as he entered the crowds. Doyle is understood to be facing a prison sentence of over a decade when he is sentenced on Tuesday.
