My mother continued browsing when I volunteered to take the groceries back to the car, which was packed into a small rolling cart. It resembled a Mary Poppins bag – rather compact, but it was astonishing how much you could load it up. That's what we believed. With the trolley straining under the weight of an already full load of supplies, my mum rested a box of sweet melons on top. She warned me to be cautious getting it back to the car. All was proceeding smoothly as I made my way through the crowds of people and out of the market. But as I was navigating the hectic main crossing into the market, the trolley became lodged on the traffic island in the middle of the road, and the crate of melons tumbled to the pavement. They went flying, spectacularly rolling out towards pedestrians and stationary cars. As the little walking man switched from green to stop, I was shocked, mouth agape, trying to process how I was going to retrieve the melons rolling in six different directions. Suddenly, a group of several older women came to my assistance. White hair, scarves and one with a walking stick – they looked like they had stepped out of the same babushka doll. They didn't hesitate by the cars creeping their way towards us. Utterly fearless, they just raised their hands to stop the vehicles, in both directions. They gathered all the melons for me, not missing a single one, as I fixed the box to hold them. I expressed gratitude to them and they remained silent, just smiled and gestured me goodbye. I didn’t eat the melons – I was not particularly fond of honeydew melon – but I share this anecdote all the time because I adore it so much.
