Outrage Erupts as Former President Trump's Post on Rob Reiner Ignites Fierce Criticism

Personalities from both sides of the partisan aisle and the Hollywood industry are coming together to denounce Donald Trump for his remarks in the wake of the tragic passing of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

An Inflammatory Social Media Post

Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Los Angeles residence, Trump posted on his platform to label the deceased director as "tortured and struggling". The message, he claimed Reiner's death was "due to the anger he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

The post quickly shifted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".

Law Enforcement Update and Arrest

Authorities have since confirmed the detention of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to murder in relation to the case. It is reported his bail was established at a significant amount.

A Torrent of Condemnation from Public Figures

The reaction to Trump's post was swift and scathing.

This is a vile and despicable statement,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also criticized the statements. Goldberg pointed to previous comments from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, asking, "Do you have no decency? Can you get any worse?"

California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a disturbed man."

Echoing this sentiment, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just lost it. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."

Criticism from Within Party

A number of Republican elected officials also voiced dismay.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". She also mentioned struggles with substance abuse and mental health some families face.

Another GOP representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disrespectful" given the nature of the deaths. He publicly dared others in his political party to defend the comments.

Reiner's History and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a vocal critic of Donald Trump. During a past interview, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the risks of autocracy should Trump return to power.

"There is authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a danger that democratic systems crumble around the world."

Regardless of his strong criticisms, Reiner had previously expressed "absolute horror" and condemned political violence without reservation after the killing of a different individual.

An Ironic Link: The Art of the Deal

Adding a element of past connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously shared the story of the photo shoot, noting Trump's demand for "special hairspray" while being photographed on a skyscraper overlooking Central Park.
