The Eurovision Song Contest Was Once a Whimsical Delight – However It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Whitewash War.

An freshly coined acronym surfaced a couple of months following the onset of the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Known as WCNSF, it stands for “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, according to doctors such as child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is unusual for doctors to care for a child who has been bereaved of their complete family. However, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary concerning the genocide in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been wiped out and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of any other place in the world. Nothing normal in many doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being deliberately targeted.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Reported Truce

The Gaza Strip continues to be an utter catastrophe. Essential medical supplies are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International have stated that genocidal acts are ongoing. Authorities rejects these claims, just as it refutes all charges it is charged with. Meanwhile, while young survivors are now enduring frigid conditions in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from advancing its professed goal of “unity and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, although several European countries have now pulled out in protest. Since this, it seems, is what unity resembles.

The contest, notably excluded Russia from taking part in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza seems treated differently.

A Selective Vision

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an effort to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Pay no mind to the evidence that settler violence and forced displacement in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that foreign reporters are still blocked from independent reporting in Gaza. None of this, apparently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Amidst Staggering Tragedy

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza at present. The broadcast will air, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. A contest that was originally built on togetherness has now become a transparent instrument to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
